Tipping Bucket Rain Gauge

The Environdata RG50 Series tipping bucket rain gauge is built to Australian Standards, WMO Standards and is almost identical to the BoM rain gauges. Sturdily constructed from stainless steel with a powder coated cast aluminium base and copper receiving funnel. The tipping mechanism is gold plated brass for the very best in water drainage. This design incorporates Hall Effect sensing for the ultimate in accurate, rugged and reliable rainfall monitoring.

Features In Detail
Details & Advantages
The RG50 Series tipping bucket rain gauge (TBRG) is designed to work in harsh Australian conditions from the Simpson Desert to the tropics of Far North QLD, to the exposed west coast of Tasmania. Constructed from highly corrosion resistant materials such as marine grade stainless steel, gold plated brass, marine grade cast aluminium and specially coated electronics, the RG50 TBRG is designed and built in Australia to ensure reliability and longevity, no matter your environment.
Method of TBRG Operation
Rain falling on the 203mm copper collecting funnel is directed through a siphon control unit which discharges as a steady stream into a two section bucket mounted in unstable equilibrium.
Once each side fills with a precise volume of water, the bucket tips. The tip empties the water from that side of the bucket while simultaneously placing the empty bucket directly under the siphon, where it now starts to fill and the process is repeated - the bucket tipping alternately about its axis: hence the name “tipping bucket rain gauge” abbreviated to TBRG.
Each tip causes the magnet to trigger the Hall Effect circuit in Environdata’s sensing electronics. This produces a 250ms square wave pulse corresponding to 0.2mm of rainfall. This signal is robust, relatively immune to electrical noise and able to travel long distances with no signal loss.
The tipping mechanism is machined from brass and then gold plated, meaning no water remains following each tip of the bucket. This in turn ensures each and every tip is accurate and consistent in volume.
The gauge is also fitted with filters in the receiver and both outlets to prevent debris (e.g. leaves, dirt, insects) from entering the working parts of the instrument in addition to a siphon to control and maintain a constant flow-rate into the bucket mechanism. The syphon is specifically designed to enhance accuracy at very high rainfall rates. The syphon can easily be taken apart to clean, which means the unit is simple to maintain in optimum condition.
TBRG Models Available:
Environdata can supply the RG50 in several versions so there is a model to best suit your needs:
RG50 - 3 Wire Hall Effect sensing for exceptional field life and reliability. The pulse output is stretched to 250 milliseconds in duration so your signal is clean and simple to read. This is the model that we supply as standard with our weather stations. A dual Hall Effect version is available on request, for times when an Auxiliary Logger is desired.
RG12R2 Dual Reed Contact Model - simple to connect to your control system and where you need a traditional 2 wire connection.
We also offer our Rain Gauge Converter, RGC12. This accepts the output from the 3 wire (Hall Effect sensing) rain gauge and provides both a relay and four different electronic outputs. This simplifies direct connection to any RTU, PLC or SCADA System, while retaining the ultra reliable Hall Effect Sensing. The relay has two changeover contact sets and the electronic outputs will match your input voltages automatically.
Additional options include heaters for operation in freezing conditions and different funnel sizes or calibrations for specialty applications. Talk to us about your needs and we will assist with a rainfall monitoring solution to suit your application.
MEETS EPA REQUIREMENTS & AUSTRALIAN STANDARDS
The RG50 tipping bucket rain gauge meets all relevant standards and EPA requirements in all states and territories of Australia (including AM-1, AM-2, AM-4 in NSW). These Rain Gauges will allow you to meet the Australian Standards AS3580.14 when sited in accordance with the same standard. When used as part of an Environdata weather station they can provide you with very accurate and reliable rainfall monitoring.
